Le colonel Emile Mayer est un personnage peu connu du grand public, mais son rôle dans l'histoire de France est essentiel. Capitaine à 28 ans, il est passionné par la stratégie militaire, prend parti pour Dreyfus et est exclu de l'armée. Rendu à la vie civile, il aide Jaurès à concevoir sa pensée sur l'armée nouvelle. A la réhabilitation du capitaine Dreyfus en 1906, justice lui est rendue : il est réintégré. Ses opinions l'empêchent d'accéder à plusieurs postes mais il n'en exerce pas moins une influence notable sur certains milieux intellectuels. Lié à Roger Martin du Gard, il reçoit beaucoup dans le salon de sa fille Cécile, grande amie de Léon Blum. C'est ici qu'il rencontre le colonel de Gaulle. Leurs liens se renforcent. De Gaulle se considère comme l'élève de Mayer : ce dernier lui apporte la conception d'une armée professionnelle et démocratique. Mayer soutient de Gaulle sur l'utilisation de l'arme blindée et anticipe comme lui la menace que représente le nazisme. Il meurt trois mois après à Munich (1938). L'avènement de la France libre, le développement de la Résistance lui doivent beaucoup, à titre posthume.
